Due to the individuality of most practice settings, the variety of caseloads, contexts and general workforces, it is impossible to develop a model which would suit all circumstances and practices. However, it is important that each practice develop a model that is applicable to both the individual Clinical Educator and practice setting. Models may include one or multiple clinical educators, students and workplaces, and may need to combine placement models to overcome the fluctuations that can be observed in the private practice context.
The model used should be outlined in the Placement Profile. When deciding upon a model, it is possible to review other models already in existence and ascertain if some or all of that model would work in your circumstance. Remember, there can be flexibility and we strongly recommend you discuss this with the University Placement Coordinator.
It is also possible to develop a shared placement model with another site in your locality. It is not essential for the second site to also be a Private Practice setting. Diverse experiences can provide significant learning opportunities to students.
University placement coordinators and/or Student led clinic coordinators could be contacted to review the placement model/s adopted in this setting and the approaches to managing fluctuations in workload (For example, involvement in administrative projects such as marketing strategies, continuing education, updating of resources, observation of and liaison with other professionals in private practice; or pairing a traditional placement model with a project based placement model).
Examples of Clinical Education Models Currently Being Used In A Private Practice Setting
Sharing the placement with another site (sharing the workload)
- Sharing the placement with another educator from the same site
- Students provide extra services to fee playing clients e.g. Clinician provides service for main problem, student works on second problem
- Students work with clients who are funded by other sources
- Students develop programs for existing clients
- Students spend some time learning about business side of placement
- Students develop handouts/resource packages for clients
- Clients receive longer sessions from students
- Students provide extra sessions to clients who have a long standing condition
In this video, Megan Saunders from Mobile Rehab describes the model they use in their setting - Sharing the placement with another educator from the same site.
