Government initiatives and Indigenous policies

Students, particularly those on clinical placement within government provided services, may need to access information about Indigenous health policies and strategies.

Closing the Gap

The Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet provides an Indigenous Closing the Gap web resource. The ‘Key Facts’ section provides clear summaries of the nature, aims, history and targets of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) strategy to achieve Indigenous health equality. The resource also provides links to other key initiatives and resources developed in response to the strategy.

Stemming from this, Australian Government Department of Education and Training's Indigenous Education site summarises information associated with education as part of the 'Closing the Gap' targets.  It identifies school funding and associated reforms and links into current education strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Queensland Health

Making Tracks towards closing the gap in health outcomes for Indigenous Queenslanders by 2033 provides a comprehensive and evidence-based policy framework for the long-term effort required across the life-span and the health service continuum to achieve sustainable health gains for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.

The Queensland Health Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capability Framework 2010 - 2033 document outlines the Queensland Government’s strategy to improve health outcomes and ‘close the gap’ in life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This document also provides a summary of the history and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health in Queensland.

Department of Education, Training and Employment Queensland

The Queensland Government Department of Education's Advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan  builds on the solid foundations Queensland has already made towards closing the gap.  The plan’s initiatives are across five priority areas: Making a great start; Reaching learning potential; Equipped for the future; Building capability; and Engaging partners.  The plan aims to:

  • improve kindergarten participation
  • lift school education outcomes
  • develop culturally appropriate teaching and learning resources
  • provide professional development opportunities for staff.

It’s Still Everyone’s Business is a powerpoint presentation that provides background information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and resources with Education Queensland.
