Supervision sessions are a vital component of a student clinical education placement. It is important to discuss with the student how supervision will occur during the placement. This helps the student to plan, and reinforces that their learning in the clinical setting is a priority for you.
There are many ways that supervision may happen. It may be something that you are able to do each day, in a one to one setting, in a group format or may occur between peers.
The Superguide: a handbook for supervising allied health professionals has an excellent section on clinical supervision. The guide is not specifically written for the Clinical Educator-Student relationship but the information is transferable to a student clinical placement. The topics covered include: functions of supervision, methods of supervision, setting expectations, documenting supervision and evaluation of supervision.
