Learning Objectives
- Increase awareness of your own emotions and early warning signs of increased stress
- Be able to identify and implement an action plan to manage any ‘threats’ to your emotional wellbeing.
Some areas of practice may require greater attention to emotional self-care such as palliative care, emergency department work, child protection and mental health. It is important to recognise and manage emotional health when on placement for future practice (good emotional self-care can reduce rates of burn out and vicarious trauma). You may be exposed to experiences that you are not comfortable with but that will provide you with a rich opportunity to learn and help others. Read the 'Maintaining Emotional Well Being' section of this website prior to completing the learning task.
Reflection Activity
Can you identify potential triggers that may affect your own emotional wellbeing?
What are some of your early warning signs for stress or reduced coping?
List three strategies that you would implement to assist with managing your own emotions. Consider early intervention as well as what you might do if things are getting out of hand.
Discuss your findings with your clinical educator early in the placement to establish a strategic plan for the remainder of your experience.
