Learning Objectives
- Become familiar with the DSM-5 as a diagnostic tool
- Obtain an understanding of some common mental health disorders
Mental Health Disorders are classified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). There are websites with the full list and background to the DSM-5. The key organisation is the American Psychiatric Association. Your university will have a copy of the manual or your clinical supervisor may have access to the manual at your prospective workplace.
Keep in mind that some clients have a dual diagnoses and you may benefit from building an awareness of specific requirements in this scenario.
